Council chairmen across Nigeria have been told that it was part of their responsibilities to reduce poverty at the grassroots.

Hon. Fatai Adekunle Ayoola, executive chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government, made the remark during the final day of the Maracana soccer fiesta in Ajegunle, Lagos State.

The council chairman Ayoola, made the assertion in reaction to a question from a journalist, on how youth restiveness can be curbed at the grassroots.

Justifying his comments, Hon. Ayoola began with the concept that Nigeria has 774 local governments in Nigeria and that the President of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari {Rtd}, was not owing any local government one month’s salary or allocation, hence the local government chairmen must be engaged on how to reduce poverty.

He added: “Every State is situated in the 774 local governments, and no State government can say that President Buhari is holding his monthly allocation.

“What are you doing with your allocations? The local government must engage these youths, empower them and make them productive. And to me, that’s the essence of governance.”

The four-day soccer fiesta was organized by the sport’s governing council, in the government of Hon. Fatai Adekunle Ayoola, which had winners from the various categories in the soccer tournament shared N6million, was part of his administration’s strategies toward curbing youth restiveness among youths and developing their sporting talents in Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government.
