– As Fakunle Sheriff Ekundayo convener of ALA 2025 introduce Grassroots Media Academy {GMA} for secondary school students
The inaugural edition of Ajegunle Legacy Awards {ALA}, held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, was attended by major stakeholders domiciled at Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government.
The event which was organized to celebrate individuals and institutions with social impact in grassroots communities of Lagos State, witnessed enterprising youths and notable stakeholders awarded accordingly at the event.
Delivering the keynote address, Fakunle Sheriff Ekundayo who is the convener of the award said it was important that people and institutions that have contributed to the growth of the community are recognized and celebrated accordingly.
“We have decided to celebrate individuals and brands that have contributed positively to the growth of grassroots communities in Lagos State over the last decade, starting with Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government.
“Their area of social impacts and philanthropic gestures over the last ten years is undisputable, and they deserved to be celebrated as icons for global references,” he added.
The convener also used the medium to announce to the guests in attendance about the pet project associated with the award, called Grassroots Media Academy {GMA}.
In his words: “Grassroots Media Academy is a basic platform for students in the Art department of secondary schools who have a passion for journalism, and we are introducing them early to the basics of journalism,”
He noted further that over 80% of secondary school students engaged themselves on the various social media platforms, and that it has become expedient for experts to guide them on what they consume and disseminate online.
“The danger of rumour, misinformation and disinformation is real, and the teenagers must be taught and guided on how they can manage their online interactions given these predominant challenges,” he said.
Fakunle also revealed that both public and private schools have been incorporated into the project, and it is expected to commence in the month of February 2025.
Highlights of the maiden edition of the Ajegunle Legacy Awards include award presentations to enterprising youths and respectable individuals who have distinguished themselves in their various fields.
Also, some of the awardees and guests agreed to sponsor the scholarship package for some of the students into Grassroots Media Academy.
The father of the day at the event His Royal Majesty Oba Moroof Oyekunle Amodu Tijani Oluwa announced to sponsor five students to GMA as part of his contribution to quality education in Ajegunle.
Among the dignitaries in attendance include Hon. Chief Adewale Adeogun member Governing Board National Maritime University Okeronko Delta State, Ambassador Michael Omijeh, Dr Jimoh Ibrahim Commissioner 2, Lagos State Audit Commission, Alhaji Yusuf Adeniji, representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Lady Roli Akerele chairperson National Association of Private School Proprietors {NAPPS}, Ba’ale Saheed Adesegun Fakunle, Mrs Idayat Fakunle among other invited dignitaries.
