HOPE FOR SPECIAL PERSONS AS REP MEMBER, OGBARA KAFILAT SEEKS ENFORCEMENT OF 2018 DISABILITY ACT

* Urges President Tinubu to reserve 10 % of appointments for Physically-Challenged persons

Five years after the signing of the disability act into law, the rights of people living with disabilities are yet to be safeguarded as they still face mobility and accessibility challenges.

Worried by this development, the House of Representatives has called for the total enforcement of the 2018 disability act.

This followed the adoption of a motion by  Hon.(Mrs.) Kafilat Ogbara, Member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, titled: “Motion on the need to enforce the provision of the discriminatory acts against persons with disabilities prohibition 2018.

Presenting the motion, she noted that section 6 of the act which provides five years transitory period for the remodification of public buildings which are movable, immovable, or automobile is yet to meet total compliance.

She elucidated that non-compliance with the act has made life unbearable for people living with disabilities.

Enthusing further at the plenary, Ogbara Kafilat noted that government institutions are yet to comply with Section 29 of the act which gives at least a five percent employability ratio to physically challenged persons.

The motion further urged President Tinubu to reserve ten percent of his political appointments for people living with disabilities.
